ISSA Yoga Certification: What the Online 200-Hour Program Actually Covers

The ISSA yoga certification is the 200-hour, fully online teacher training offered by the International Sports Sciences Association (ISSA), a U.S. fitness-education company better known for its personal trainer and nutrition credentials. According to ISSA, the program is a Yoga Alliance–approved Registered Yoga School (RYS 200), and graduates can apply for the RYT 200 credential with Yoga Alliance. Whether that combination is right for you depends on what you actually need the certificate to do.

What the ISSA yoga certification actually is

The ISSA Yoga 200 is one of the more established online yoga teacher training programs. It follows the same 200-hour structure that has become the de facto entry point in the industry, and it is delivered entirely online through the ISSA learning platform. Unlike a residential or studio-based program, there are no in-person contact hours, no live cohort, and no supervised teaching practicum built in.

ISSA is best known in the broader fitness world for its Certified Personal Trainer program, and that background shapes the Yoga 200. The program is positioned as a bridge for fitness professionals who want to add yoga teaching to an existing career, not as a traditional ashram-style teacher training. That distinction matters when you are comparing it to other paths into teaching.

What the curriculum covers

According to ISSA, the 200-hour curriculum is built around the standard anatomy, alignment, sequencing, philosophy and teaching methodology blocks, with Hatha and Vinyasa as the primary styles taught. ISSA also frames the program with a fitness-flavoured layer: client assessment, basic program design, sports-medicine awareness and business and marketing skills.

  • Asana, alignment and sequencing for Hatha and Vinyasa-style classes.
  • Anatomy and physiology applied to safe practice and injury awareness.
  • Yoga philosophy and history, including the eight limbs, pranayama and meditation basics.
  • Teaching methodology: cueing, demonstration, adjustments and class management.
  • Business and career skills: pricing, marketing and building a teaching practice.

Materials, as listed by ISSA, include a 200-hour training manual, an asana guidebook, around 30 hours of video lectures, worksheets and suggested practice sessions, plus unlimited educational support during enrolment.

Format, exam, and time to complete

The program is 100% online and self-paced. ISSA gives students up to 6 months to complete the coursework from the date of enrolment, and structures the material as a 10-week pacing guide for students who want one, though actual completion time varies with how much you study each week. There is no built-in cohort or live teaching requirement.

To graduate, students must be at least 18 years old, work through the 200 hours, pass an open-book, open-note, online multiple-choice exam (one free retake is included), and submit a current CPR/AED certification card. ISSA also offers practice quizzes to help prepare for the final exam. On completion, you download a digital certificate; physical certificates and transcripts can be ordered separately.

Unlike ISSA’s personal-trainer exam, which runs through the NCCA-accredited NCCPT, the Yoga 200 exam is not NCCA-accredited. ISSA’s own accreditations page lists Yoga Alliance, not a fitness-testing accreditor, as the recognition behind the Yoga 200 credential.

If the goal is the full immersive experience, a residential program such as a 200-hour yoga teacher training in Rishikesh or a domestic teacher training immersion delivers things an online course structurally cannot. If the goal is flexibility and a recognised credential on a self-paced schedule, the ISSA route is a reasonable entry point, and you can layer in-person workshops on top later. For a wider look at both paths, our guides to yoga certification and yoga teacher training cover the trade-offs in more detail.

RYS 200 and what Yoga Alliance registration means here

ISSA states on its product page that the Yoga 200 program is a Yoga Alliance–approved Registered Yoga School (RYS 200) course, and that it meets RYS 200 curriculum, practicum and instructor-led training standards. Graduates are eligible to apply for the RYT 200 credential through Yoga Alliance.

That said, registration is not automatic. According to ISSA, RYT 200 registration is optional, but is often required by yoga studios and fitness centers that use it as a hiring filter. Our overview of how the Yoga Alliance certificate works in practice explains the RYS and RYT designations in more detail. The practical point: if RYT status matters for the jobs you want, confirm directly in the Yoga Alliance school directory that the specific ISSA program is listed before enrolling, since partnerships and registration status can change.

Who the ISSA yoga certification is a good fit for

  • Personal trainers and group fitness instructors adding yoga classes to an existing fitness career, especially in gym settings where ISSA's name is already familiar.
  • Career changers testing the waters who want structured online study before committing to a more expensive residential training.
  • Experienced practitioners deepening their knowledge with no immediate plan to teach, but who want a credential for personal or future professional use.

It is a weaker fit if your goal is teaching at a dedicated yoga studio rooted in a specific lineage, where in-person training with supervised teaching hours is often the norm, or if you want deep immersion in traditional philosophy, Sanskrit, or ashram-style mentorship. In that case, looking at a traditional teacher training program or a focused option such as a yoga therapy certification may be a better match for what you want to learn.

Questions to ask before enrolling (for ISSA, or any program)

  1. Is the program currently listed as a Registered Yoga School (RYS) with Yoga Alliance, verified in the directory rather than on the sales page?
  2. What exactly does the final exam assess, and is there any evaluated live teaching component, or is the exam entirely written?
  3. What is included in the current price: materials, exam attempts, certificate fees, transcripts?
  4. What does ongoing certification maintenance look like: are there continuing-education requirements or renewal fees?
  5. What happens if you do not finish within the allowed time: is there an extension option, and at what cost?
  6. Do the studios, gyms or corporate programs where you actually want to work recognise this credential, or do they require a specific RYT level or in-person training?
